'Surf's Up': Not Just Another Penguin Movie

First they marched, then they danced, & now they surf! In the latest film to feature penguins as its stars 'Surf's Up' takes us on a fun and wild ride alongside the headstrong teen Cody Maverick, voiced by Shia LeBeouf. Don't let the fact that this is yet another movie with the flightless birds deter you from giving it a chance. Where as 'Happy Feet' relied on song and dance to carry itself, 'Surf's Up' focuses more so on story and laughs while it makes a huge splash in the vast ocean of recent CGI family flicks.

The Good, The Bad, & The Bottom Line of 'Hostel: Part II'

Oh, the horror! No, I can't believe it either, but here I am doing another review for a sequel. Up this week is the follow-up to last year's much hyped, only mediocre "stomach churning" splatter-fest 'Hostel'. In 'Part II' the roles have been reversed (in more ways than one as you'll see after viewing it) as the victims this time are young women. Upon changing plans the three ladies end up traveling to Slovakia after persuaded by the gorgeous model from their art class. One by one they are kidnapped and taken to the oh so familiar place visited last year where a world of torture and pain awaits.

'Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End': Surprisingly Fun

Tensions are riding high this weekend as we go into Memorial weekend and wrap up the month of May with the release of 'Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End'. It was only less than a year ago that the last installment 'Dead Man's Chest' which was nothing but a jumbled mess of feeble jokes and not so exciting action sequences hit theaters. Despite it being so dreadful, it went on to be the highest grossing film of 2006 and the third biggest worldwide of all time. Having said that, to me it's now certain more than ever that this one will have an equal, if not greater amount of success at the box office; seeing as how this supposed final addition is actually better than the last.

The film opens with a scene of a filthy and downright disgusting lot of people in line awaiting death by hanging for their "crimes" of piracy. A young boy probably no more than ten years of age climbs the steps and saunters across the platform along with some of his fellow condemned. He soon star

'Shrek the Third': A Mediocre Ogre

The summer of sequels continues this week with the third chapter of the formerly funny fairy tale franchise 'Shrek'. Where as the second one stepped it up with a solid story-line, introduced a wonderful new character (Puss in Boots), & kept the appeal of the original; the third time is definitely not a charm. Too many new characters (thirteen to be exact) are brought in while familiar favorites lose their charisma, & there just aren't enough laughs to make this one worthwhile.

Upon the death of Far Far Away's king it appears the mud-loving Shrek (voiced by Mike Myers) and his wife Fiona (voiced by Cameron Diaz) are next in line to take the throne. (That's right, no matriarchy here.) The problem is Shrek doesn't want to rule. He ends up on a search along with sidekicks Donkey (voiced by Eddie Murphy) and Puss in Boots (voiced by Antonio Banderas) for the only other living heir, Artie (voiced by Justin Timberlake). '28 Weeks Later': Real Horror Returns

Sequel wise 2007 is no different than any of the previous years during the new millennium. So far this year four have been released and every week up until June 29th one is set to come out. The latest is from third-time director, Juan Carlos Fresnadillo and is the follow-up to the 2003 surprise hit '28 Days Later'. Sequels that are able to out-do their originals in terms of quality are far and few and is even truer more so in the horror genre. '28 Weeks Later' does just that by taking it up a notch with an even more riveting premise and execution than last time.

The Final Countdown - Episode 4

After a bit of delay due to technical difficulties, here is the fourth episode of The Final Countdown. This week is the debut and addition of Bruce Costella to the show! As you'll see upon listening, he adds his own unique touch to the show. This week ended up being Shia Lebouf week as we pretty much gave his current film 'Disturbia' as well as 'Transformers' and next year's 'Indiana Jones and the City of Gods' (which Lebouf was recently confirmed to be starring in) countless plugs. Also, Scott gives the scoop on the upcoming 'Death Race' remake being directed by Paul Anderson and his review of 'Vacancy'. To top it all off, Bruce recovers from the $5.50 bin at Wal*Mart an instant "classic" by the name of 'The Halfway House'. And to celebrate it seems Hollywood has decided to release the worst line-up of films so far this year all this week. From 'The Condemned' to 'Wind Chill' this is no doubt a horrid week for movies. Aside from the new films coming out this week, there's a lot going on in the news. This week I'll tell you what the Virigina Tech killer and a film called 'Old Boy' are believed to have in common, whose swinging their way onto Broadway, & what brave little soul will bear it all in 'The Simpsons'. I'm baaaaaccckkk!!! Yep, new day, same great stuff for ya right here in the Weekly Reel. I had to switch the day of its release to Fridays due to my schedule, but no worries it's all good. Now that I've explained that, let me tell you just a few of the things included in this weeks column. After the news and box office tallies, there's the new section I've added called 30 Second Reviews. Since I don't always do a full review for every film I see, I figured this would be a nice way to give some quick thoughts about them. After that there's the list of this weeks new releases. This is yet another big week, with a total of eight. Then finally, there's a featurette of 'Pirates of the Caribbean: At Worlds End' with director and cast comments, clips from 'Hot Fuzz' and '28 Weeks Later', & of course, the next episode of The Final Countdown. The Good, The Bad, & The Bottom Line of 'Grindhouse'

Usually when you go to see a film, you don't hope to see scratched prints, missing reels, & hear the sound popping. However, in the case of 'Grindhouse' it's those things that are the appeal. The film, helmed by directors Robert Rodriguez and Quentin Tarantino is a throwback to the films of the 60's and 70's that played in the grungy theaters that share the same name as its title. Grindhouses played non-stop blocks of movies filled with large amounts of violence and sex accompanied with over-the-top plots. In Rodriguez's 'Planet Terror' a toxic gas is released into the air causing everyone to become what are known as "sickos". The remote Texas town where chaos now ensues has only a slim chance of survival. All hope rests on the shoulders of hot shot El Wray (Freddy Rodriguez) and his machine gun leg wielding ex-girlfriend Cherry Darling; played by Rose McGowan. Everything You Need to Know about Robert Rodriguez & Quentino Tarantino's 'Grindhouse'

It all began four years ago in Quentin Tarantino’s Hollywood Hills home. Close friend and fellow director Robert Rodriguez was over. While there he happened to notice a familiar movie poster to the 1957 double feature ‘Dragstrip Girl’ and ‘Rock All Night’ on the floor. A short time later that day he told Quentin how we had always wanted to do a double feature. It was then he proposed the idea that they each make a movie and put the two together as such. Quentin immediately responded with, “…and we’ve got to call it Grindhouse!” Now it’s 2007 and that idea has been made into a reality. Inspired by the films containing extreme amounts of violence, explicit sex, & crazy storylines that were popularized the 70’s, ‘Grindhouse’ is now looking like it will be among the best films of the year.

'300': Bloody Eyecandy That's Sometimes Sweet

Film adaptations whether they're TV, musical, novel, or in the case of '300', graphic novel are always risky. The director has to worry about what to keep from the original material, what to take out, & what to add in order to make the final product considered great. All those things are equally important and if even one is flawed, the others could be comprised no matter how good they may be. In second-time director Zack Snyder's big screen take on Frank Miller's 1998 graphic novel there are many visual effects, but really not much else. The odd thing is, that's actually a good thing. A very good thing.

Not exactly looking for what I just described you say? Well then, you best get ya wits 'bout yaself and mosey on down to your local theater and still see it as Samuel L. Jackson's character Lazarus would say. As long as you're open minded and don't take everything seriously, there's no reason you won't leave the theater glad you saw it.

It's goin' down, well at least in theaters this weekend. In the comedy 'Norbit', Eddie Murphy is once again wearing a fatsuit, this time playing the over-sized, self-indulgent, fury-filled Rasputia. That is actually the only purpose of this film sadly; giving Murphy the excuse to parade around in a fatsuit for another go around. Other than that, 'Norbit' is pointless.

Not only does director Nick Cassavetes focus on the obvious ripped from the headlines story, he also zooms in and sheds light on another aspect. That of which being not all gangsters, or wannabe gangsters in this case, are masterminds. Sometimes, the alpha dog is actually the least intelligent member of the pack.

It wasn't exactly a mystery that 'Primeval' was more than likely going to be a substandard creature-feature. If Disney's last minute decision to switch its release date with another upcoming film, 'The Invisible' like it's nothing more than a pawn wasn't a clue, I don't know what is. Its jokes aren't all that funny, it's political message is unnecessary, & the constant game of tug-of-war the plot plays is a bit annoying. Yet…it's actually kind of fun to watch.

Various obstacles arise along the way while she refuses to give up on them. Her determination and effort in the end are rewarded as her hopes are revived and turned into reality. 'Freedom Writers' has that familiar plot which it transforms into a predictable, yet emotional ride.

The Best Films of 2006

Now that the worst films are out of the way, I can finally get to the best. I believe this year was good year to a certain degree for films. Most of the gems were saved for last though, since it seems most of the excellent weren't released until the last months. Before I begin though, let me mention some films that won't be making the list, but deserve to be recognized as being pretty good. 'Little Miss Sunshine', 'Monster House', 'Apocalypto', 'Akeelah and the Bee', 'Blood Diamond', 'Clerks II', 'Thank You for Smoking', 'A Scanner Darkly', 'The Pursuit of Happyness', & 'Happy Feet'. All of these are great in their own respectable ways, but not one of these are included in the following list. So what exactly does that leave? Well, read on and find out.
