The Weekly Reel - April 08, 2007

So as some of you may have noticed, there was no Reel Report for the month of March. It actually was prepared after a few days of delay but then I ended up changing my mind about it's release. I decided this week would be the week I put into action the idea I had over a month or so ago. That being I do a weekly version of the column. Well this is it, the debut. I actually think it's better than what Reel Report was simply because it'll be more current and it comes with the addition of some goodies. Instead of going over exactly what those goodies are, I guess you'll have to click that read more button to find out. So do it.

Jack, Davy, & Barbossa are all back in the upcoming 'Pirates of the Caribbean: At Worlds End'. I myself was surprisingly very excited about the film upon the release of its trailer just a couple of weeks ago. This past week that all changed once I heard the following disturbing news: there might be a fourth film in the franchise. Rumor has it Orlando Bloom's character William Turner won't be returning if and when the film is made. However (almost) everyone's favorite quirky pirate Captain Jack, played by Johnny Depp is highly likely to. Unidentified sources at Disney say the house of the mouse is seriously considering furthering the story with Depp who's said to be very interested in continuing his role as Jack. I honestly hope they don't go through with the making of another one and let it all end with dignity in 'At Worlds End'. The keyword being "end".
The truth is apparently still out there. According to David Duchovny a sequel to the popular 90's TV show, 'The X-Files' and the '98 film movie of the same name is now officially in the works. The series creator Chris Carter and writer Frank Spotnitz are currently writing a script for it. As predicted Duchovny will of course be back as well as Gillian Anderson to reprise their roles as Mulder and Scully. Duchovny reportedly said, "We've forgotten why we hate one another and can only remember why we love one another and we're very happy to go back."
'The Ant Bully', 'The Wicker Man', 'Ghost Rider', & coming soon, 'Next'. When will the madness stop?!! It seems like Nicolas Cage is just picking roles with his eyes closed now adays. It was released yesterday that in his next film he'll be playing James Jensen, "a soldier-turned-mystic bent on revenge" from 'The Sadhu' comic series. YES, ANOTHER COMIC BOOK FILM. Filming begins early next year in India, the country where the comic actually takes place. I wish he'd stop taking any and every role practically offered to him and just do one, maybe two, films a year. Then he might have a better chance at doing ones that were as great as 2005's 'Lord of War'.

Aside from 'Grindhouse' and 'Black Book' there really isn't anything too great out this week. Dueling family comedies 'Are We Done Yet?' & 'Firehouse Dog' both look pretty bad and 'The Reaping' is outright being glossed over (which is for the better) by the tremendous hype for 'Grindhouse'. Then you have 'The Hoax' and 'The TV Set', but due to poor promotion the average movie goer doesn't even know about them. I'd suggest 'Grindhouse' for everyone 17+ and if you have kids go for 'Firehouse Dog'. It actually got some decent reviews, so who knows, it might be okay. Either way I predict 'Are We Done Yet?' will come out on top just barely beating out Rodriguez and Tarantino's double-feature for the top spot at the box office this weekend. That is indeed sad, but more than likely it'll happen.
The rundown:
'Are We Done Yet?' - 1 hr. 32 min.
Rated PG for some innuendos and brief language.
'Black Book' - 2 hrs. 25 min.
Rated R for some strong violence, graphic nudity, sexuality, & language.
'Firehouse Dog' - 1 hr. 51 min.
Rated PG for sequences of action peril, some mild crude humor, & language.
'Grindhouse' - 3 hrs. 12 min.
Rated R for strong graphic bloody violence and gore, pervasive language, some sexuality, nudity, & drug use.
'The Hoax' - 1 hr. 55 min
Rated R for language.
'The Reaping' - 1 hr. 38 min.
Rated R for violence, disturbing images, & some sexuality.
'The TV Set' - 1 hr. 27 min.
Rated R for language.

A teen under house-arrest, Vikings, & a ghetto white girl, OH MY! Those are just a few of the characters that will be seen in next weeks line up of films to be released. I'll be seeing 'Pathfinder' for two reasons. One, Marcus Nispel directed it, and two, it just looks totally awesome. How can you go wrong with battling Vikings? That's right, you can't. On the other side of the spectrum is 'Distubia'. It stars Shia LaBeouf who is also in this summer's 'Transformers'. He plays a guy named Kale who basically ends up under court-ordered house arrest and begins to suspect his neighbor is a murderer. Well, at least the name is kind of cool because there's nothing else really going for the film. Also coming out next week is 'Slow Burn'. No, they didn't make the David Bowie song into a movie. Instead Ray Liotta and Jolene Blalock have been brought together in a film that I'm not fully investing into as to say it'll be really good, but I'll got as far to say it just may surprise. There's a certain something about the trailer that gives me the feeling Wayne Beach (the director) has done well with it. I'll just have to wait and see.
