Consumers Beware: Creditreport.com

In May, I visited creditreport.com to view my annual credit statement. They had a link to a credit monitoring site that offered a notice of any change of credit via Email. I went to the site, read over the terms (I could cancel anytime I wanted, and I would only be charged when there was a change to my credit) and signed up. To sign up, you have to put in a credit card to be charged, as with most everything else these days.
In April, I got an Email telling me of changes to my credit. When I looked at it, it was very hard to read and offered no real information. They charged me $8.95 for the notice, as agreed in the TOS. It was the last email I got.
I had another charge on my credit card in June, but had not received any email notice of a change. A quick check of my credit with another company showed there had not been a change. I called the 1800 number provided, and was on hold for 45 minutes before hanging up.
In Sept, there was another charge, this time for $11.95, and again no Email. This time I knew there had been a change, because I had applied for a credit card, and of course any check of credit lowers your credit score. I called again, and this time got right through to someone. But nobody seemed to be the right department and after being transfered to 12 different people, and a refusal for a supervisor, I hung up.
I called my credit card company and asked them to block any charges from the fraudulent company known as CIC Credit Monitoring. The rep with the credit card company told me that this is a request they hear about twice a week.
On January 3rd, my credit card company called me to tell me that CIC had tried to run a charge for $75! I had still not received an email, (Or a response to the emails I had sent them.) and I knew there had been no changes to my credit.
This time I called the 800 number and sat on hold for an hour and a half. A man answered with a sigh and after I explained my problem he sent me to tech support. Tech support tried to convince me they could fix the email problem, but I declined several times, and was finally sent to retention.
The woman at retention said that if I would lift the block off my credit card, and accept their one time $75 fee, they would no longer charge me. I declined, saying I've been charged random amounts for no reason, and since the $75 fee could not be explained, I certainly wasn't allowing them any more access to my card so they could charge me at will!
The woman sent me to a supervisor, where I sat on hold without hold music for nearly half an hour. The supervisor put me on speaker phone, causing a horrible echo from both him and me. A tactic more than a few aggressive retention companies will do to convince you to hang up. As if the hold time with no hold music, wasn't enough!
The supervisor threatened me with a lawsuit, claiming I signed a contract to stay with the company for a year. When I asked for a copy of this contract to be mailed to me, they told me they could only Email it. But they knew full well my Email wasn't working. I pressed the issue, and was told, "We can't print the contract out."
I returned with, "So how exactly is this going to hold up in court? What are you going to do, Email the judge?"
The "law suit" was quickly dropped and instead I was offered a 50% discount. But 50% of what? The amount changed every time, so how do I know I'm getting 50% off?
Finally, my account was canceled, and the second email I ever received from this company was them confirming I had indeed canceled.
This company obviously has to offer some services, or it wouldn't be allowed to operate, however I've yet to find what exactly they offer.

You said, "This company obviously has to offer some services, or it wouldn't be allowed to operate..."
But what makes you think that is true? Our current government is too business friendly and not nearly as willing to regulate business as they should be. Many many companies offer no real or tangible service at all, yet steal money for consumers all the time.
Thanks for speaking up about this obvious fraud, and kudos for standing up and not being bullied.

wow, seriously all of you
wow, seriously all of you are just plain stupid. what it sounds like is that al of you who felt that you were scammed obviously did not take your time and read what you were signing up for. Obviously if you give your credit card information you will be charged. Just take your time to read people. No-one is trying to scam you. Creditreport.com actaully helps out alot, i have the service and i love it. I ony pay9.95 a month and they monitor all 3 bureaus and track my score 24/7. I recieve updates all the time on all of my reports. I even had something that was wrong on one of my reports that i fixed right away when i recieved the update. Its well worth the money. Dont just take my word. go to the website and actaully read it, it offers lots of information on bettering your credit and protecting yourself.......... sorry for any typos just wanted to put my 2 cents in

Cancelling a recurring charge
This type of business is internet based, if you're going to use a credit or debit card, this is the place. Visa is more card holder friendly than MasterCard but the merchant agreement has the same rules. Attempt to contact the merchant, (Attempt can be as simple as trying to call or email, if the merchant doesn't respond it doesn't matter.)
Call your bank, dispute the charge as "Cancelled recurring" or "Not as Described" You have 120 days from the date of last contact or attempted contact to initiate a dispute. You can charge back every charge that's within that 120 day span. You'll have to write a letter explaining your point and the bank will submit the chargeback. The merchant's acquirere will attempt to rebut the chargeback, you'll have to add one additional page of new cardholder doc, (an additional letter, reiterating the complaint is enough) and the bank will continue the case. this is the point where most merchant's will allow the case to drop and the cardholder's "conditional credit" becomes an actual credit.
creditreport.com, or something else?
I'm confused. Who did you sign up with for credit monitoring? You say "creditreport.com had a link to a credit monitoring site." What's the credit monitoring site?
Did you sign up with creditreport.com--who would have charged you as MNI Credit Report Services--or was something like consumerinfo.com, who would be CIC Credit Monitoring Service? The two companies are totally separate entities.
Or did MNI sell your credit card number, and then CIC signed you up for their service without your approval using negative option marketing?
creditreport.com
Their telephone number is 866-365-8654. Somehow I signed up with them and I don't recall giving out any credit card number when I went into the feebee site-annualcreditreport.com. I was asked immediately for my SS# when I called creditreport.com and I refused knowing full well they already had it. When I spoke to consuner rep. on 4/28/2008 they said it was clearly stated that there will be monthly charge. I have a printed copy of the full report and there is no reference on the printed report addressing creditreport.com. She said the $11.95 was per month and they would let me know if there was "problem" via e-mail. I didn't even know I was doing business with them and certainly would not have open any e-mail. The rep from this outfit out of california said she did not know what the address was where she was located. I wanted it to inform my Congressional Representative. I asked for a supervisor and got a person by the name of Mary. She said the account would be canceled. We will see.
Reluctantly, she gave me this mailing address; PO Box 9153, Canaga Park, CA 91304. The first rep told me they had over 100 locations and she wasn't able to give me any becase she didn't know where she was as she spoke.
Lesson... nothing is free even the "annualcreditreport.com", watch your cards, and let people know this is a setup even though you feel stupid.

Never agree to a contract you don't read line by line, word by word. and especially over the internet. Get a e banking service from your bank.

No one needs credit
No one needs credit monitoring you can pull your own report quarterly and still be safe as far as identity protection, I wouldn't pay for something I can do on my own, you also get a free report from each credit bureaus each yeah at annualcreditreport.com it's a legitimate site you only get one report a year from each agency. For anyone in debt i would suggest finding a company who offers no fee balance transfers to consolidate your credit and pay it off asap so that you can keep a good credit score.
CreditReport.com
I received notices that in my e-mail on two occasions that there were changes made to my credit report from this company thinking it was from another site that I had signed up with for free. I then realized that there were chanrges made to my account for 11.95 which i had no idea about. i called and the man told me i wasnt even fully registered but they still charged my account for services i didnt ask for or need. I do not every recall signing up once and I have the lack of e-mail confirmations to prove it. This CREDITREPORT.COM is bogus and they got me for 23.90 and i'm not going down without a fight. they will make sure they never mess with me or my account again and they will be shut down if i have something to say about it!
creditreport.com
Creditreport.com is a legitimate website. They promote the credit monitoring (30 day trial period. With the option to cancel within the 30 day trial period in order not to be billed )In a clear and easy to read fashion 3 times before you put in any information. Just because you were distracted by the word FREE when getting your credit report is not MNI's company issue. Dont be mad because you can not read. I love the service and I have had no problelms with the service. Quit Making accusations of unauthorized use of credit card to a company just because you get mad that you did not read the english text that was provided to you prior to you getting your report. If you were smart you would take advantage of the identity theft protection because it is at an all time high and protect your butt from becoming a victim. Seriously you did put in your credit card number did you really think that it was just for the fun of it.
CreditReport.com Sucks
On May 17, 2008 I signed up for a credit report. What CreditReport.com does NOT make clear is that there is a mandatory sign-up for an $11.95 monthly credit monitoring "service". You then have to opt out of this before the 30-day free trial period ends.
It really says something that you have to opt out of a service rather than opt in, no? Talk about a scam.
At any rate, I only realized this once they had charged me for the second month (the first apparently was free).
The day I received the charge, June 17, I called them up expecting that they would simply refund me the money for the service that I was unaware of and had not used.
On the first try they refused and were only willing to cancel the service.
Since the first month was free, I should not have been charged for that month, and should have retained service until July 17 (the month they forced me to pay for). However, they canceled the service and ended it immediately (June 17), thereby effectively charging me the $11.95 for nothing.
When I called back to complain they gave me the run around for a while. When I mentioned that they must get a lot of complaints like this since as there were so many on the internet, the guy spoke over me repeatedly and rudely told me that other credit report agencies got more.
After a long, drawn out argument "Fernando" told me that he was going to refund me the money. I've got the cancellation report and have contacted my bank to notify them that any further charges would be fraudulent.
If you have problems, call their toll free number and ask to speak to "FERNANDO 612" or "FERNANDO 6127" (he changed the number by the end of the phone call). If they tell you it is not possible to refund your money point out that you read online that they did.
This is a horrible, horrible service. PLEASE, DO YOURSELF A FAVOR AND DON'T USE IT!!! They are betting on people not noticing, paying the first month for a service they were unaware of, and not having the fortitude to complain enough or take legal action against them to get their money back.
I looked for class action suits against them, but as of this point there don't appear to be any.
According to both customer service people that I spoke to the agreement was plainly stated when you sign up, but it wasn't so plain as to catch my eye. They are, at the very least, being astonishingly sleazy.
I can't stand companies that
I can't stand companies that do this, my mother was getting charged from some service she thought was free for a few months when i found out i was furious and told her call her back tell her not a single one of those charges were authorized and file a chargeback. The banks have to file it you get your money back which comes from the merchants account. If you ever want to stop getting billed and a refund just tell the company your filing a chargeback unless you are REFUNDED. This is one time the customer is just about always right. The only website worth using once a year is annualcreditreport.com you get your credit report once a year from all three agencies because of a new law that came out a few years ago. It's not a scam look them up not anywhere do they ask for credit card information, unlike other sites who claim to give you free reports only after you've signed up for all their offers. Its like a company offering no fee balance transfers but charging for some other service to cover that.
I've learned my lesson with
I've learned my lesson with credit reports, I've learned that I need to act carefully and that I have to accept a professional advise for everything I do.

Re: I got ripped off
I got ripped off by this fraudulent company too! They will not give me a refund!
Ripped Off
I got ripped off to the tune of $140. Not very happy discovered it called them and they tried to make me hang up only giving me my order number. Then they charged me again. Never actually gave me a credit report. Terrible service. People are liars.
CreditReport.com Treats Customers HORRIBLY
I have purchased from this company many times, and they used to be good. I would buy a 3 bureau report with no problems. Then, one time I signed up for the "free credit monitoring service" with promise that I could cancel at any time in the first 30 days. I cancelled shortly into it by email, and then got charged about a month later anyway. I called them and they said "You can't cancel by email, you have to cancel by phone". I thought that was rather stupid and another have-to-read-it-in-the-fine-print sort of thing, but proceeded to cancel by phone. I didn't even worry about it after that, till I realized several months later that they were STILL charging my card monthly. I called them to cancel AGAIN. I believe it took one more call after this before they finally cancelled my order and quit charging me monthly. They got money out of me for around 6 months.
Well, I stupidly figured that it would be safe to buy JUST a credit report and not sign up for anything recurring, since I had done this before with no problems. Well, what do you know? A couple months later I see 9.95 posted to my card. I call them up, and ask them why I'm being charged and they try to tell me that I bought some sort of credit monitoring service. I NEVER EVER EVER signed up for this. The lady even admitted on the phone that I didn't sign up for it, and it "signs you up automatically". I told her if I didn't sign up, then it wasn't legal to charge me and to refund me. She stated that they do not have a refund policy. I told her I wanted a manager. She transferred me to a manager, who told me that somewhere in the fine print it automatically signs you up for this service ,unless you opt out, when you are placing an order. I did not see this, and I ALWAYS look for stuff like this. I personally own a company and would never in a million years do something like that to my customers, and if I did, I would expect them to be as mad as I was. The lady refused to refund me, so I told her I'd call my credit card company to get it reversed. I called my bank, and they reversed it right out. BEWARE. CreditReport.com is a horrible company to work with. They've lost a customer for good.

I would p0litely suggest, you (also being one of "you people") learn english. A bit of spelling would also help.
I did READ, and I cancelled. They charged my credit card, anyway. And continue to charge it. After multiple calls. These people are con artists.

11.95 still on my credit card even though I have a cancellation number
Www.creditreport.com is a SCAM
I have also a same problem. Let me share my experience with you.
As a user of CreditReport.com, I must say I was very unhappy. Their practices can be considered fraudulent and extremely deceptive. This is personal experience from this unorganized and user-UNfriendly service. I wanted to see my credit score. They offered a free credit score. I thought this was great. Unfortunately they forgot to disclose to me that I would be charged $12.95 per month for credit monitoring. They have the word ‘free’ in big letters, written all over their website. However, do not be deceived. They apparently give you a 30 day free service for credit monitoring, which they write in VERY VERY small print. I received my creidt score on June 1st. On July 1st, (31 days after my credit score), I was charged on my credit card for their apparent credit monitoring. I was never notified of a bill or receipt until I got my credit card statement!
BOTTOM LINE: DO NOT USE CREDITREPORT.COM BECAUSE THEY ARE DECEPTIVE AND ARE A BUNCH OF SCAM ARTISTS!

OK so i feel so dumb i signed up for that site today before looking at what all you guys had to say. Soon after i received my credit report i called and canceled. It was very loud in the background of the guy on the phone. he didn't seem at all interested in his job. I knew something was up as soon and he answered. I told them i wanted to get out of the "free trial" and he said ok its canceled thats it.... so i called again and got the same guy.. i mean come on what are the odds of that happening?he said it was canceled but im still a member..huh.. so im going to call again and ask for a letter or e-mail documenting that i don't have an account. any other things i should be aware of?
Deceptive Marketing Practices
?Mighty Net, Inc runs creditreport.com. CreditReport.com created my login and password and failed to provide them to me. The phone number provided on the website for canceling the service is for a different company. I found this company by finding the parent company 'Mighty Net' in the terms & conditions section and canceled my service by using Google maps to find the Mighty Net Inc's phone number.
I called them up
the number 866-365-8654 is a working number. I canceled my account during the free trial period, and also spoke to a manager. I told Karina about the incorrect number, and she was quite surprised- seemed genuine. She was concerned and said she would bring it up with her supervisors. I had no problems and my call was handled quickly.
Get a confirmation number of your cancellation, and speak to a manager. If you're scared, jump straight to a manager, they looked up my account with only the last 4 digits of my social, + name, + email. I had Karina verify my cancellation.
Tell you what, If I get a charge, there will be hell to pay- and I'll let ya'll know.
First of all I would like to
First of all I would like to state that any one over the age of 18 has the personal responsiblity as a consumer to be knowlegable about products and purchases, especially when using credit cards over the internet. There is absolutely nothing in life for free every American knows that by the age of eight. I have use Creditreport.com's products. The first page tells you in plain English that in order to get the FREE report there will be an AUTOMATIC enrollment in to a FREE TRIAL. Just because the site states that you can get a free report and score doesn't excuse the consumer from not reading everything on the FIRST page. The Offer details that explain the Monitoring service take up almost half the screen. How is that half of America can see the Orange and the Blue boxes and the othe half only see the one that's asking for the card information? Could it be because we are conditioned to be consumers from childhood? The second thing I would like to mention is that if you are going to make a formal national complaint you should at least know what you are talking about. CIC is not a service that creditreport.com offers and the serivces that they do offer are optional and not hidden in any fine print. At some point personal responisbilty comes in to play. Before you complain that you have been scammed or taken advantage of you should make sure that you have fulfilled your obligations as a consumer and acted RESPONSIBLY when making purchase. Besides who buys something without making sure they are getting what they ask for?

thanks for sharing your true experience with us.its true that in the name of serving the people many credit card companies are grasping a lot of money from us.its not right!well i think the gov. should pass any law on this issue or otherwise, these companies will keep continuing their business by grasping a lot money from people.
The only comment I have..
is that after signing up and being billed the $11.95 per month which is in line with one of the other credit monitoring services I use, I was under the impression all three credit bureaus would be monitored. After getting new hits and notifications from one of my other services, I learned after calling that only Trans Union was being monitored. Obviously, I then cancelled and will monitor my credit card to see if any further charges for services come in. Stay tuned...
CreditReport.com is a Scam, Recommended by Greenpath
Creditreport.com was recommended to me by Greenpath. I was told by them that the credit report was free. I naively didn't read the fine print on the creditreport.com deceptive site. When I called creditreport.com, they were very unfriendly, interrupting me and going on about how clear it was on their site that I was signing up for this "service." I tried to tell them that I felt misled by their site, and at least hoped that they would make the terms more obvious. Terms I recall were "your credit card will not be billed." Also, "free" was in a font about ten times larger than the real terms. Oh well. Caveat Emptor.
Nice to have a place to vent and add my voice to the cachophony of complaints about these stinkers. I am hoping for change, and will probably contact Greenpath to recommend that they cease recommending CreditReport.com. Every complaint about CreditReport.com that appears on the web increases the chances that others will not fall into this trap. Notice how many times I say CreditReport.com to increase the ranking of this note on the search engines. Say it with me: CreditReport.com CreditReport.com CreditReport.com CreditReport.com CreditReport.com CreditReport.com CreditReport.com. And one more time: CreditReport.com. Now that feels good. Nice to be pissed off, ripped off and unemployed. Companies that take advantage of people with too much time on their hands will be punished!
Probably not worth the attempt to file grievance with Capitol One. Anybody have any success getting this charge reversed?

Never had a problem with them so far. When my purse was stolen in May of '08 I subscribed to them unitl I was sure the crisis had past. After 8 months of their service, I just recently called and cancelled. Susan was very nice and did cancel giving me a cancellation number. Of course, I will check my Credit Card statement next month to make sure.
Are you serious?
In a time and age of proliferation of internet scams, WHY would you give your credit card number knowingly without reading all terms and conditions? Why would one be so flippant about the money they work to earn?
The one time that I used this service, several years ago, the same selling point was still being used. Reading all the way through it, I fully understood that the CREDIT REPORT was free, and if I cancelled their service within the first month, I would not be charged for their service. Since I was getting a free month, I spent time perusing through the benefits they offered with the said service to see if I wanted to pay them for it. Ultimately, I did not see a personal benefit and cancelled the service before I was charged. The company (Experian, I believe?) stayed true to their word, and I was never charged.
What this comes down to is personal responsibility and educating oneself before giving away personal financial information. If someone has your card number, they can ultimately charge you for services, whether you bothered to take the time to read about terms and conditions or not.
So no, you can't get the charge reversed. It was your own irresponsibility and laziness that cost you money. Hopefully you learned a lesson from your mistake, rather than wanting to blame it on someone else.
You get what you bother to learn about.

"So how exactly is this going to hold up in court? What are you going to do, Email the judge?"
HORRIBLE SERVICE - BUYER RUN...NO REFUND POLICY
The company uses deception to sign you up for their monthly services. I spoke with their customer service: Susan badge 0797. She stated the company has "NO Refund Policy." Creditreport.com has horrible business practices...

Sometimes, people just have to be a total bitch with all these fraudulent credit companies. These bastards don't know anything but squeeze funds from hapless customers. You can sue them in court actually, which makes the supervisor's threat really ridiculous. You could have even counterattacked with that same threat.

Wow...thanks everybody.
I have to thank everybody in this article...I signed up with Credit Report today and by the time I found this page the damage was done. I called them immediately and the person that talked with me was very helpful in letting me opt out of the service. I'm sure they'd be less inclined to help me if they had started charging me, but it was painless enough during the free trial.
Again, thanks to everybody for all the information on here.
What a bunch of rip off artists
got billed for them for one month, just got the bill today. talked to one of their customer reps who really tried to lay it on "do you know that identity theft is the biggest crime out there today" (or some such nonsense) and some other stuff that the guy probably had to read as part of the "procedure" - finally i was able to get a confirmation number and THEN they send me an EMAIL asking me to AGAIN CONFIRM my cancellation - only to find that the EMAIL'S LINKS ARE FAULTY - i'm sure this is no "accident" - they will not load in my browser.
so of course i send them a letter to their customer service dept informing them of my intention to cancel their service and giving them my confirmation number. they have also been informed that any further attempts to bill me will be considered by me to be FRADULENT attempts to bill me and will be handled appropriately.
the State attorney general's office has a nice website for reporting crooked companies like this, and i shall be watching future credit card statements with a hawk's eye. any attempt on the part of this company to bill me further will be met with the appropriate legal responses. (i have already informed my credit card company of this and it is noted in my file which shall greatly expedite future dealings (if any) that i have in this regard.
the key to dealing with crooks like this is to keep a well documented paper trail and fight them like a barracuda
they're messing with the wrong man this time

i am a worker for creditreport.com i understand why people are upset about being charged, but if you weren't so dumb and read everything on the page you might have noticed you would have had a trial, you people see free free free and don't ready anything else, also what idiot agrees to terms and conditions without reading the terms and then you give a credit card number for something that is free, if the service was completely free why do we need your card number why do we even need to no if you have a credit card at all, if a website has words on it besides free you should read the site because the words probably mean something or we wouldn't have put them on there, so next time you get charged for something your dumbass signed your own self up for, don't be mad at anyone except for your own self because YOUR DUMBASS DIDN'T READ WHAT YOU SIGNED UP FOR, ain't that why you went to school to learn how to read, i'm just an average worker for this company but it is true you agreed to service actually two times before you get your report
SO NEXT TIME ALL YOU DUMBASS'S READ WHAT YOU SIGN UP FOR AND YOU MIGHT NOT HAVE ANY SUPRISE CHARGES FUCK'N DUMBASS'S
> you people see free free
> you people see free free free and don't ready anything else
Isn't that what the people who designed your website want? You make 'free free free' in big letters with lots of contrast and then put the "Order Details" in light blue on a slightly lighter blue background.
> SO NEXT TIME ALL YOU DUMBASS'S READ WHAT YOU SIGN UP FOR AND YOU MIGHT NOT HAVE ANY SUPRISE CHARGES FUCK'N DUMBASS'S
What a wonderful attitude! It's speaks so well of the company you work for and is sure to attract lots of new customers. It's nice to know, too, that your company hires such highly intelligent people who have such a fine command of the English language.
its true
Its true, people should do that, but at the same time, You sound like a total jackass for saying what you did, after admitting to working there.
Creditreport.com = scammers
It does state "free trial" and when u give someone your SSN# and credit card u should ask yourself why?? I also work for this pathetic company!! Economy bad and I have to pay bills!! They are scammers no better than Bernie Madoff - Consume beware!!! We were told yesterday that we would be "written up" if we told anyone when their next billing date was. DECEITFUL!!!
