My Personal Top 10 Best Horror Movie Monsters, Enemies, and Entities

The other day, I ran into this list called: "The Nine Most Infamous Horror Villains of That Haunt Your Worst Nightmares..."
Yeah, I don't know what the fuck that title means either. It pissed me off because, aside from how poorly written the whole blog was, the selection, I felt, was horribly flawed. Yes, it is just someone's random list, but I can still be irritated by reading it.
So, I decided to make my own list, which I personally feel is much better.
Instead of going with the most scariest, I am going to go with what I feel are the top monsters, enemies, and entities. They may not be the scariest, but they could be the most infamous when associated with horror films.
First, a few honorable mentions:
- The Shark from JAWS
- Leatherface
- Pennywise
(NOTE: Unfortunately, It was not a movie, but rather a TV mini series [and yes, based on the much better Stephen King novel]. Otherwise, I would include him, but I like to avoid douchebag comments as much as possible, so I had to disqualify him. However, Pennywise the Dancing Clown deserves his props anyway.)
10. Jason Voorhees (From Friday the 13th)

While Jason has NEVER scared me, personally, outside of maybe the boat sequence in first Friday the 13th, I have to put him here because he is an icon of the Slasher genre and is probably one of the most associated character with 1980s horror movies and horror movies in general.
Jason, as a child, had alledgedly drowned at Camp Crystal Lake after the guidance counselors were too busy having sex and not watching the children. His mother killed anyone who came near the camp in his name. However, after she was murdered, Jason sought vengeance.
He may have became a parody of himself before it was all over with, but you still can't argue that he doesn't belong on this list. If nothing else, he changed hockey masks for everyone!
9. TIE: The Video (The Ring series) / The Curse (The Grudge series)
Whether you like these movies or not, The Ring and The Grudge served as extremely successful attempts of bringing Asian horror films to the American market. Like all genres you can find in horror movies, some people love these movies and some people hate them. However, movies such as Shutter, Dark Water, and The Eye were given an Americanized treatment as well based on the success of these two movie series.
The video features Samara. She is the vengeful spirit of a young girl who was mistreated as a child and was left for dead in a well. Now, she is giving those who watch this mysterious video tape 7 days to live in order to figure out the mystery.
The Curse is a bit complex to sum up in just one paragraph. Basically, Kayako and Toshio were murdered by the man of the house, Takeo. Now, that house is cursed, and anyone who steps into that home will eventually die because of it.
People know the sound of The Curse ('ah-ah-ah-ah-ah'). People know that creepy girl from the Ring video.
These They're not for everybody, but the movies and the villains in the movie are infamous.
8. The Devil's Rejects (From House of Thousand Corpses and The Devil's Rejects)

Three members of the Firefly family: Baby Firefly, Captain Spaulding, and Otis
The Devil's Rejects wasn't really scary. It was more of a portrait of a family of self-serving sociopaths. House of 1000 Corpses went for some cheap scares. In the end, there is just something disturbing about how this family of psychopaths interacts with both each other and the outside world. Rob Zombie took the concept of the family from Texas Chainsaw Massacre and somehow actually managed to turn that upside down!
The most popular of the bunch is easily Baby Firefly (played by Sheri Moon Zombie). She is psychotic, immature, narcisstic, and sexy all at the same time. She'd sleep with you and then slit your throat. However, even knowing that, men would still give her a chance! Otis is the epitome of trailer park trash. Captain Spaulding is the biggest self-serving worthless waste of human space out there, but you still have to try his fried chicken! Mama Firefly is the motherly type. She loves her family, but also loves killing everyone else while she is at it. Of course, you can't forget Grandpa Hugo, Tiny, or RJ.
Overall, it is the interaction and the personalities that makes the Firefly family just completely insane and deserving of a top spot here.
7. Jigsaw (From the SAW series)

Jigsaw sets his victims up in "games." If they lose, it is their fault. If they follow the rules, they win, albeit a bit disfigured as a result. Why is that? Well, the Jigsaw killer aka John Kramer has easiliest the creepiest motive that can be found in horror movies. He is a cancer patient. He feels that his life was getting cut short, while there are people who have the opportunity to live a long and great life end up wasting it or not fully appreciating it. However, having the victim be confronted with their own mortality changes them and makes them appreciate their own life.
He wasn't a tortured disfigured kid like Jason. He was never secluded from the outside world like Leatherface. He wasn't born a sociopath like Michael Myers. In fact, he was an award winning engineer featured in magazines and such. He was married and had a child on the way until she miscarried.
Saw is my personal favorite horror series, for the two of you that care, by the way. The movie has debuted #1 4 years in a row and it has a big following. Jigsaw has earned his spot on this list.
6. Ghostface (From the Scream series)
While Scream films or The Ghostface(s) may not be the most horrifying movies or villains, they have totally earned their spot here. Scream took what was usually considered a sleazy genre in the slasher film and turned it upside down. Previous, the big time films were made on really cheap budgets and focused mostly on gore and finding new ways to kill people. While those films still do get direct-to-video releases Instead, the more well known films take the route that Scream had. They actually have big name actors. There is much less emphasis on gore. It is also obvious that they were NOT made on a cheap budget.
The Ghostface villain in each movie calls their victims (usually from inside their home) and proceed to terrorize them. Sometimes with horror movie trivia and sometimes with some rather unsettling information. There was a lot of focus on irony and cliches, which the Ghostface was a cliche.
"Hello Sydney" became a catchphrase for quite some time. You can find a Ghostface mask every Halloween just about every where, even at your local dollar store. The Ghostface is easily one of the most instantly recognizable figures in horror movies and that is why he/she deserves a spot here.
5. Michael Myers (From the Halloween series)

With a simple tilt of the head in a modified William Shatner mask, Michael Myers helped define an entire new genre of horror flicks. The soulless sociopath who only feels one emotion... hate. He has only one need... to kill. Michael Myers embodies every negative feeling and emotion possible.
The remake, however, makes Michael Myers a little more sympathetic. In the remake, he was raised in an evironment that basically guaranteed that he was going to be screwed up one way or another. Some people loved this remake because it gave more insight into the character. Some people hated it because it seemed more like a Rob Zombie movie rather than a Halloween movie.
The Halloween series may not always have been its strongest. However, people know who Michael Myers is and why he is here.
4. Universal Monsters

Hey, I have to stop and give my props to the classics. While they may not scare anybody in this day and age, they broke a lot of ground in horror movies. I am talking about the Universal Monsters, which were the monsteres featured in horror flicks released by Universal Studios.
This includes, but is not limited to:
- Dracula
- Frankenstein's Monster
- The Wolf Man
- The Mummy
- The Invisible Man
- The Mole Man
- Mr. Hyde
- The Phantom of the Opera.
Not only are they iconic and recognizable to almost anyone, every Halloween, you can find yourself a Dracula or Frankenstein costume kit just about anywhere. There is all kinds dolls, masks, action figures, coffee cups, and even underwear based around these monsters.
Some of the movies are horribly cheesy. Some of them are classics. Either way, you can't deny their spot in any Horror Movie villain list.
3. Norman Bates (From Psycho)

Norman Bates and the Hitchock classic Psycho is easily one of the most creepy horror movie villains. A man who has gone insane from the death of his possesive and overprotective mom or "Mother," if you will. So, now he has developed what is known in layman's terms as Multiple Personality Disorder (or what many people often confuse for as schizophrenia).
The shower scene is a classic. Hitchcock and Norman Bates takes what is usually to most people as something private and intimate as a shower, and invades that with rather terrifying results. Every time I watch that movie, even though I know the scene very well, I always pause right before I take a shower. I know better, but I still think about it. I know many people who feel the same way. Now that is what I call an effective scare.
Unfortunately, Mr. Bates hasn't seen much success outside of the original film. The sequels were just not up to part of the original. Honestly, they should have just left the original Hitchcock classic alone. You also can't forget the failed remake (Seriously, Vince Vaughn?! That's the best you could do?).
2. Hannibal Lecter (From Manhunter, Silence of the Lambs, Hannibal, Red Dragon, and Hannibal Rising)

With the two simple words, "Hello Clarise," Hannibal captivated audiences everywhere. People were impressed with high intellect, and then repulsed by him for his taste for human flesh.
What made this more interesting is that Hannibal is not the main antagonist in Silence of the Lambs. Mr. Lecter is more of the anti-hero of the story. Buffalo Bill is the main antagonist, and pretty damn creepy one at that. However, if you ask anybody, who do they remember more in that movie... Hannibal Lecter or Buffalo Bill, who do you think the answer is generally going to be?
Unfortunately, outside of Silence of the Lambs (and to a lesser degree, Red Dragon), Hannibal hasn't had much success. We still love him anyway! Plus, who doesn't dig Anthony Hopkins?
All I know is, I wouldn't want to be apart of the Lecter's Thanksgiving celebration.
1. Freddy Krueger (From the Nightmare on Elm Street series)
While Freddy Krueger and the Nightmare on Elm Street series belongs to the Slasher genre, which is considered a sleazy genre as opposed to the class of films that Silence of the Lambs and Psycho were in, nobody can deny that Freddy Krueger is the ultimate horror movie villain.
His glove with knives is horrifying. His burnt face is horrifying. His intentions are horrifying. Not to mention that he can haunt you when you are most defenseless, in your sleep, is horrifying! While he may be scary, he is also very appealing to audiences because of his charisma and rather demented sense of humor.
Robert Englund, who plays Freddy in every movie, is an excellent actor. He was a classically trained actor as opposed to a stunt man which is used in most slasher films. Not to mention that he is a nice guy from what most people can tell from his public appearances and behind the scenes stories.
Congratulations to Freddy Krueger for being #1. Yeah, I talk like he is an actual person and this list actually means something, but hey.
So that is it. Thoughts? Concerns? Flames? Whatever it is, feel free to comment!
