Smallville - Complete First Season

Today for the Pop Culture Archive machine, it is an amalgation of two Smallville-related posts. First a Review, and then some popular commentary!
For the past 5 years, I have been getting nothing but rave reviews from my fellow geeks in regards to Smallville. So, thanks to the awesome service that is NetFlix, I checked disc one of season 1. I was thouroughly impressed, so I bought Smallville Season One for a nice $20 during the holiday season at my local Wal-Mart.
For those who do not know, Smallville chronicles the storied tale of how a young farm boy named Clark Kent evolves into the superhero we all know and love, Superman. We get to see him discover the abilities he has. We also get to see him develop his personal relationships with such people as Pete Ross, Lana Lang, and Lex Luthor.
Some hardcore fans do not like some of the huge differences between the series and the comics. For a comic book character that has at least 30 or so odd different timelines & continuities (Thank you Superman v1, Superboy(s), Crisis, Elseworlds, & Birthright), Smallville can be added to that list as far as I am concerned. This is a reboot, and will not be a complete faithful adaptation. If it was, then this series would probably blow.
I have to say that the series is very engaging. The thing about this season is that the show starts off in its Kryptonite-infected "Freak of the Week" phase of the show. In Season One, we get introduced to Clark Kent, Lana Lang, Pete Ross, Martha Kent, Jonathan Kent, Chloe Sullivan (original character), and Lex Luthor. Lex Luthor drives irresonsibly and crashes into Clark off of a bridge. Clark, completely unscratched, rescues Lex Luthor from the sinking car. Lex, while befriending clark, wants to know why this all happened. Heck, Clark wants to know what happened. His parents reveal to Clark that he is an alien. It is also a big secret that must not be revealed to anyone, as everyone would either A. Not handle it well emotionally or B. Exploit Clark for all its worth. Jon & Martha are good people with good morals. Jonathan believe in fighting for what is right. They teach these values to Clark.
Clark discovers the following powers this season: Super Speed, Super Strength, X-Ray vision, and Impervious to anything outside of Kryptonite.
I can say that I am very impressed with this series. It is rather enaging. The characterization of most the characters are done well, albeit a bit annoying at times (e.g. Jon Kent's stubborn hatred for "The Luthors" despite Lex's efforts or Lana's performances ranging towards barf-inducing at times). I also tend to like all of the rather ironic moments and statements made throughout the series (e.g. "Clark, our relationship will be the stuff of legends" - Lex to Clark).
Now for the DVD Review
The Video: 9/10 - The footage for the pilot and some of the first episodes does leave a little bit to be desired. However after the first six episodes (A.K.A. Probably when the network decided to order more episodes), the video very much improves on all accounts.
The Audio: 10/10 - This probably shouldn't count for me because I have shitty-ass mono. However, the sound that comes out that one speaker is very nice and fluid. The show's theme song ("Save Me") is perfect sounding.
The Extras: 8/10 - There is a total of 7 minutes of deleted scens. We are also given commentary tracks for the first two episodes. There isn't much else aside from a couple promos and a "Map of Smallville" that isn't much
The Main Feature: 9/10 - The only thing keeping this thing from a perfect 10 is that the series only gets tremendously better than this excellent first season.
Total: 35/40 ...
averages out to 8.75/10
round up to 9
Final Score: 9/10
Conclusion: If you are a comic book fan, this is a must have. If you like Dawson's Creek & the supernatural, check it out. If you like neither, Netflix the first disc before you go spending $45 bucks on this.
Oh Smallville, how I love thee! This year, the adopted a new intro where there is wind blowing everyone's faces and air. Going for the dramatic model-type look, I guess. So, with this rather windy intro now...I have interpreted the looks on everyone's faces when the wind is blowing their hair.
