Good Bands With Bad Hits Compilations

Guest Writers

Good bands with bad hits compilations

1. Vault: Def Leppard Greatest Hits by Def Leppard

"This so-called Greatest Hits focuses way too much on their pop stuff, and not enough on the true masterpieces. Start with the Pyromania and Hysteria albums instead."

2. The Best of Deep Purple: Millennium Collection by Deep Purple

"Let's see. This band peaked in the SEVENTIES, but the compilation has nothing but EIGHTIES material!? I don't think I need to say anything else. Rhino's Very Best Of Deep Purple is a fine alternative."

3. Edward the Great: Greatest Hits by Iron Maiden

"This compilation isn't TOO bad, but it has nothing from the Paul Di'Anno days! Likewise, some albums are overemphasized and some overlooked entirely! Best Of The Beast is better."

4. 20th Century Masters - The Millennium Collection: The Best of Eric Clapton by Clapton, Eric

"No Yardbirds tracks. Forgivable, I guess. No Bluesbreakers tracks. Forgivable, I guess. BUT NO CREAM SONGS!? UNFORGIVABLE! Get The Cream Of Clapton instead."

5. 20th Century Masters - The Millennium Collection: The Best of Motley Crue by Motley Crue

"Where's the band's biggest hit, Dr. Feelgood!? Where's their first hit, the cover of Smokin' In The Boys Room? Where's the cover of Helter Skelter? The official Best Of is much better."

6. Cross Road by Bon Jovi

"Bon Jovi's best albums are his first three. So why do the first two albums only get one song each on here!? And why is there so much post-1986 material!? Get the first three albums separately instead."

7. Best of Van Halen, Vol. 1 by Van Halen

"The number of hits missing from this set just boggles the mind. If you're looking for an intro to Van Halen, get their first album. This set is horribly imbalanced."

8. Very Best of Jethro Tull by Jethro Tull

"Again, this isn't bad, but it is hurt severely by omissions. Where are Teacher and Cross Eyed Mary? Also, Thick As A Brick is edited. The Aqualung album is a better introduction to Tull than this set."

9. Starship's Greatest Hits (Ten Years and Change 1979-1991) by Jefferson Starship

"This set tries to cover too much ground in too little time. Why didn't they two a two-disc set, with one featuring Jefferson Starship the classic rock band, and one featuring Starship the pop band?"

10. Turn It on Again: The Hits by Genesis

"If Peter Gabriel was the original singer for Genesis, why does this set only feature TWO SONGS with him singing!? That's disgraceful. And where's the band's best song, the hit Just A Job To Do?"

11. Hits by Collins, Phil

"This is one a set that's ruined by a few omissions. In this case, the omitted tracks are Don't Lose My Number and I Don't Care Anymore. Why'd we get a bunch of mediocre cover songs instead?"

12. Journey - Greatest Hits by Journey

"Let's see. No material with original vocalist Gregg Rollie singing!? And no Stone In Love!? Once again, a few minor flaws ruin an entire compilation."

13. Eagles - Their Greatest Hits 1971-1975 by Eagles

"This was a good set for when it was made, but by modern standards, it's just a short compilation that covers very little of the band's career."

14. The Best of George Harrison by Harrison, George

"What had potential to be a great compilation was ultimately ruined. This could have been an excellent "early solo" Best Of, but instead, the record company made it half Beatles and half solo... Why?"

15. Blast from Your Past by Starr, Ringo

"This compilation covers Ringo's golden years as a solo artist, but there is only half an hour of music? And, of course, it only covers five years. Get his self-titled third album instead."

16. Big Hits and Nasty Cuts: The Best of Twisted Sister by Twisted Sister

"Now this is just WRONG! They call it a Best Of, and yet half of the tracks are previously unreleased live ones!? I don't think so. Any other compilation by this band is better - even the budget ones."

17. Quiet Riot - The Greatest Hits by Quiet Riot

"There are only eleven tracks here, and there is nothing from the early years with Randy Rhoads! Also, it doesn't cover their early new millennium stuff . If you're new to the band, get Metal Health."

18. Forty Seasons: The Best of Skid Row by Skid Row

"I like seeing previously unreleased material on a hits compilation, but Skid Row gives us overkill with it. Half of the set is rarities! That's just a little much. Start with their self-titled album."

19. Hits: The Very Best of Erasure by Erasure

"Why did Erasure release compilation when another one (that was just fine) was readily available? Admittingly, this one covers a greater time period, but that doesn't make it the better set."

20. Best of Yaz by Yaz

"This compilation isn't really bad at all, it's the principle of the thing that confuses me. Why release a hits compilation if you only released TWO ALBUMS!?"

21. Best of Grim Reaper by Grim Reaper

"Ditto. Grim Reaper released only three albums. For just double the cost of this set, you can own their complete discography!"

22. International: Best of New Order by New Order

"Once again, this band had a compilation previously available that was just fine. The older set was better, and the DVD that comes with this set jacks the price way up. Get their earlier set instead."

23. The Immaculate Collection by Madonna

"Actually, this set isn't that bad, but it has problems. There are too many edited tracks, and it doesn't span Madonna's entire career. Get her eighties albums instead."

24. Aerosmith's Greatest Hits by Aerosmith

"This set only covers Aerosmith's golden years, so there's no filler. However, there are only ten tracks, and some of them are edited! A career-spanning retrospective is better in the long run."

25. Black Sabbath - Greatest Hits [Griffin] by Black Sabbath

"This set only has a few songs, and it lacks diversity. Why do record companies fail to realize that Black Sabbath had good songs after Ozzy left?"

Greatest Hit.

Toni Basil, over the course of her career, has released two albums with two singles which spawned two hits ("Hey Mickey" and one other that no one remembers now). She has no fewer than five (5) Greatest Hits albums released in her name. Pretty impressive actually.

With Def Leppard, you are

With Def Leppard, you are better getting of Rock of Ages. That is about as close as you get to DEF-initive.

With Sabbath, there are 3 collections that are needed for TRUE Sabbath fans:
1. We Sold Our Soul For Rock 'n' Roll (Ozzy Osbourne)
2. The Dio Years (Ronnie James Dio)
3. The Sabbath Stones (Tony Martin and everyone else)

Van Halen - Best of Both Worlds should cover it.

Aerosmith - O, Yeah! The Ultimate Aerosmith Hits

Journey - Get Time CUBED or if you are not wanting Box sets, try The Essential Journey
