Patriotism Is More Than A Word........

I looked at the census report, and according to the Dept. of Commerce, there are 108.8 million households in the US as of 2007. Lets round up to 110 million just to be safe.
If the bailout the treasury and FED are proposing passes this weekend, we are looking at a total of AT LEAST 2.5 trillion in bailouts in the last 2 years. That doesn’t include the massive losses that are almost sure to come from the government using tax money to invest in a failed real estate market (Fannie & Freddie) and ruined banking industry. Many of the country’s top economist believe the losses could easily reach 5 trillion in the coming years. But, let’s just stick with 2.5 trillion so we aren’t speculating.
If you do that math, that is $181,000 that the government could have given to every household in the United States of America.
For the price of bailing out foreign investors like China (which is what this is all about), every American household could have gotten a fresh start by paying off their home, paying cash for their children’s education, paying off college loans, paying off high interest credit cards that are making the banks rich, pay medical debts, or just put the money into a interest bearing account and save towards their retirement.
Instead, the bailout has rallied the stock markets, making the rich who were heavily invested, even richer. It made the Chinese stock market’s rally making the rich business owners, who manufacture the products we used to make in this country, even richer.
In the end, some CEO’s will lose their positions, but still walk away with their multi-million dollar pension packages. Some people holding Board of Director positions with these failed companies will be let go, but they have already made their millions.
What we end up with is a Government owned (and controlled) market. Call it Government Controlled Capitalism, or call it by its real name, Socialism, either way, the government has taken the future prosperity of today’s children and used it to bailout the World’s rich.
And what does THIS tax paying citizen think the result of all this will be? That is easy. American’s will exercise their “Right” to vote, while never considering the “Duty” involved. They will go to the polls in November and vote for one of the politicians who participated in selling out our country, and they will do it under the guise of “Picking the Lesser of Two Evils”. American’s will gamble the future of this Country, which their children will soon inherit, on a politician who is “Less Evil” than the other.
A few of us out there will do something completely different. We will participate in this election as past generations have, before the advent of main stream media and 24 hour news stations. We will look at today’s children, who are America’s future, and make the conscious decision to not to approach this election with casual indifference. We will spend our free time performing our duty as American Citizen’s. We will research ALL candidates. If they currently hold an office, we will pour over their past voting records and discover what policies they have a history of supporting or rejecting. We will make mental notes of the issues that are important not only to us, but important for our children’s future. We will set aside the selfishness that has become such common place in today’s society by not just focusing on issues that are important to us as individuals, but set our sights on issues that are good for America as a whole. We might even do something, which today seems revolutionary. We might vote for somebody representing a party other than one of the two that has led our country into a economic and political cloud of corruption and deceit. We might vote for somebody who doesn’t necessarily share our religious views, but supports our political beliefs. We might vote for somebody who disagrees with social issues we support such as abortion or gay marriage, but who offers a true change that could lead to a better future for our Country.
The question that begs to be answered, however, is how many of “us” are there? Unfortunately, not enough I surmise. But if ‘we’ hold true to our beliefs, our sense of duty, and our obligations to our children, then ‘we’ will be able to look into the eyes of our innocent grandchildren and tell them, “I tried”. ‘We’ will look back on our lives and know that ‘we’ honored those who died to give us our freedoms by staying true to the ideals our great nation was once known for. And we will never have to look into a mirror at somebody who chose one evil over another.
