Good Follow Up to Wii Sports

When the Wii launched it came with a game called Wii Sports. Wii Sports was actually a pretty fun game that showed people just what the Wii could do. The game itself was an okay game, but managed to be a good game to bring out during parties. Bowling, Tennis and Golf in particular were some fun games to play. A few months later Wii Play came out and it wasn't exactly the follow up people thought of when they thought of Wii Sports. Well, now we have Wii Sports Resort, and this time it does feel like a follow up to Wii Sports. If you liked Wii Sports, there's no guarantee you'll like this one.

Wii Sports Resort uses mostly the Wii Motion Sensor Plus to do its work. It comes with a Wii Motion Sensor Plus if you don't already have one. There are more games here, with two of them coming directly from Wii Sports (Bowling and Golf) and having new motion sensor plus stuff thrown in there for good measure.

So what is there to do with Wii Sports Resort? Well, there are quite a few new games, some of which are fun, others may not be as satisfactory. As you might expect, your mileage may vary. There are games like Frisbee, where you can practice your throwing and accuracy and even play a type of frisbee golf. This is one of the nice things about Wii Sports Resort, that there are a few other games located within the games themselves.

Wii Motion Plus can be a little sensitive, however. With games like Frisbee and Golf, it can be really sensitive. The waggle of the Wii Remote in the first game was quite sensitive. Bowling, however, has been noticeably enhanced by Wii Motion Plus.

But you're still getting games where wagging might be enough to win. Swordplay comes to mind, as sometimes winning is as simple as just wagging the remote constantly. Yet, for what it's worth, you're getting a good package of games. The water sports games are among the best in the lot. Some don't actually require Wii Motion Plus, and they can see you doing some really weird things from time to time. Wake boarding is easily the greatest addition here. It's the most fun and open of all the game. There's also basketball which is a little fun to play, and probably makes some of the best use of Wii Motion Plus.

There's also archery which is simple to learn and actually quite fun, despite that it doesn't have you moving around as much as the other games might. So while it isn't quite as active it is still a lot of fun.

That's not to say there are no games that are no fun. Cycling is not very much fun at all. Everything is worth checking out at least once in Wii Sports Resort, but cycling may be something you won't find yourself coming back to time and time again. You'll pedal using the Wii Remote and Nunchuck, but it feels more like a chore than anything.

On the other hand, at least you're getting a good set of games. Even though they're relatively short. If there was any major problem with Wii Sports Resort, it would be the same problem Nintendo faces with almost all of their multiplayer games. It's fun to play with other people, but it's a drag by yourself. And while there's multiplayer here, it's also quite sad that much of it is on a "take turns" basis. Most people can't all play at the same time on most of the games. It's a great social tool, at least, but it still stands that by yourself Wii Sports Resort just isn't going to be all that much fun to play at all.

The graphics look exactly the same as before. Wii Sports wasn't exactly a looker to begin with, and here it's not really different. It's pretty plain and basic looking. There was almost no improvement. You get to see different environments, but aside from all that, it's still the same basic graphics. But at least you'll have fun.

In the end, Wii Sports Resort can be a fun game... provided you're playing with friends. Most of the new games are a lot of fun to play and it maintains the simplicity of the first Wii Sports, which is very nice. So anyone can pick up and play and get involved. It's not much for presentation, but at least it's fun and that's all that matters.

FINAL RATING: 8/10
