Essential Gamecube games for the Wii

Pop Culture Archives

Many people are buying the new Wii console from Nintendo, good for them as it is a great, innovative machine with plenty of potential. The system is frequently sold-out here in the UK, with customers still placed on a huge pre-order list. For those of us lucky enough to nab a Wii we get to enjoy such delights as Zelda: Twilight Princess and Wario Ware.
This is where the bad point come in. There aren’t that many games around at the moment *sadness*

So here be a list for all those Wii owners who missed out on a whole bunch of AMAZING games for Nintendo’s previous console, the Gamecube. I haven't included Mario games to give the thing a bit more variety rather than just typing out the however-many Mario games there are.

With the backwards compatibility of the Wii and a lot of shops selling old, cheap Gamecube games there is no reason why you can’t enjoy some of these classic gaming delights.

Grab a Cube controller pad and get gaming!

F-Zero GX - The twitch racer that converted many people from the PS2 to the Gamecube. Well maybe not, but it did for me! Wipeout looks snail-pace slow next to this blaster of a game. A steep learning curve from the off set and punishment is dealt to you with the slightest mistake. Perfect for a single player who is willing to put the effort in.

Pikmin 2 - I'm not a fan of the RTS genre. Usually. Pikmin 2 changed my viewpoint with its cutesy charm and sweet gameplay. I can happily grow Pikmin and not bother with the storyline, just admiring the beauty of the gardens and the inhabitants. Every time a Pikmin dies I still feel a little sad.

Metal Gear Solid: Twin Snakes - The first Metal Gear Solid game with a fresh lick of paint and added features. Some gamers refuse to like this game due to the over-the-top cut scenes which were added, but others love the game. It’s all personal taste in the end.

The 1st person view for aiming was added and makes the game easier, but it doesn’t have to be used. All the things which made the original game great are present and correct.

Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker - My favourite Zelda game, in fact I place it higher than Twilight Princess. The presentation is so gorgeous to look at and the combat is tight and works well. Disliked by many for the cel-shaded graphics, this is a different slant on the Zelda story which I think works tremendously well.
Tingle still weirds me out. The creepy shit.

Viewtiful Joe - Very stylish and a great blast to play. One of the first games to use the now over-used "slo-mo" and implements it very well it the crazy beat-em-up action. Trying to master this game took a fair bit of dedication but is well worth it when you look so cool kicking butt.!

Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door - OK, so I added a Mario game into the list. Sorry! I added this one as it is very different to the usual Mario stuff being that is an RPG work of art. It’s Mario made of paper! It doesn’t get any better than this people.

Filled with quirky humour, plenty of paper-related puzzles and numerous side quests this game will keep you playing for many, many hours.

Star Wars: Rogue Leader - Usually I shy away from movie/game tie ins but this is totally different. All the best flying/shooting bits from the original trilogy all rolled into one (now cheap at second-hand) game.

There’s nothing quite like annihilating a squadron of TIE fighters, avoiding Vader down the trench run and firing off a couple of missiles down a convenient exhaust vent of the Death Star.
There’s also nothing quite like missing and crashing into the wall at the end.
Womp Rats were easier targets…

For these next 2 games I pass you over to my great friend “JammyJu” who adds these to the list:

Animal Crossing - It might be hard to generalise a genre for this game, but one thing you can generalise it with though, is it’s fun, cute, charming goodness, which will leave you coming back for some more each and every day.

Tales of Symphonia - Best RPG last generation in my opinion at the moment. Yet again amazing cel-shaded character design, challenging dungeons and a great character development throughout the game. Also a very emotional tale at times, in fact one part drew a tear in my eye Cry
